Lazy Susan

This one takes a bit of imagination. I think the way you have to think about it is that it’s kinda round, and that each of those “bowls” are items that are on the lazy susan and can be rotated.

Coaster

I can think of nothing finer for me to put my glass on. Much classier than the cliched junk mail CD turned into a coaster.

Placecard Treat Basket

I think we have reached a level of formality that I hope never to reach. I’m assuming that this is something to put next to the placecards at a formal dinner, to hold the party favors. Or something.

Have a Happy New Year, everyone, and remember to randomly fold things on a regular basis, so as to have more fodder for these calendars!! Not for me, though, I’m done with origami for some time. Kabuto Wrapper

A Kabuto is a Japanese helmet, the kind that were worn by Samurai. They were often quite fanciful. Nearest I can figure, this is a wrapper made up in the style of a Kabuto. Once again, I needed to use a sheet of printer paper, so I have some funky ugly striping going on.

5-Pointed Star

Yet another star. I’m not real sure if I got this right, though…the instructions were sorta vague about this.

Gift Card Envelope

There’s an actual gift card in there. Who’s the lucky person who will get it? Well, I’ll tell you it’s no one who’s reading this. You bunch of ingrates.

Peacock

I feel like they have the same attitude as me. They’re not even trying anymore.

Scrunch Tree

Not sure what this is about, but once again it’s got a bunch of double folds and some reshaping, so it does not get the seal of approval from me.

Shell Decoration

This didn’t quite turn out the way it was intended. All those…ruffles were supposed to look like the pattern on seashells. Somehow…it’s less impressive than that.

Seahorse

I really liked this one, although I wasn’t patient enough to get the full bend in the tail.

Santa

Full disclosure; I used a bit of photoshop here. The contrast between red and white is critical for this one, but it was being screwed up by the writing on the “white” side of the paper. So I made it all white. Now, at least you can see the white of the hat and the white of the beard. Before, it seemed like it was a terminator-style santa.

2-Fold Santa

I actually prefer this one to the previous Santa. Only two folds, and while abstract, I think it’s more aesthetically pleasing. If you’re having trouble imagining it, I added some “annotations”.

Ornament

All it needs is some string, and you can attach it to the Christmas tree from two weeks ago.

Boot

This is listed as a boot, but I think it’s clearly more of a stocking. Hang it with care.

8 Pointed Star

Get ready for a deluge of stars. December is, apparently, a great month for stars. Speaking of stars, I like the winter because that’s when Orion is out, and it’s the only constellation I can recognize. It’s pretty pathetic.

Candy Cane

This one would have worked better if I had less writing on one side, and more red on the other side. And sugar.

Coin Purse

Honestly, this bears no resemblance to any coin purse I’ve ever seen, unless that area in the middle is supposed to represent the opening up a purse, drawn tight by drawstrings or something. But, let’s be honest here: I’m suffering from a form of senioritis. It’s the last semester, and I can see the finish line.

Noshi

According to wikipedia, a noshi is a ceremonial fold attached to gifts to express good wishes. I think it kinda looks like a coffin.

Another lame piece of furniture.

Seated Woman Hieroglyph

In case you can’t see it, the woman is in profile, looking to your left, and you can see her nose protruding from her face, and she’s got a shawl on or something.

True Mummy

Accept no substitutes, people. Only the true mummy is here! By the way, I hated this one. Multiple double folds, needing to “reshape” folds after being fold — all signs point to this being the suck. But, you know, here it is. By the way, this origami commemorates King Tutankhamun’s tomb being opened for the first time in 1922.

Tom Turkey

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! This turkey is a bit more complicated than last week’s turkey, and I think it looks a bit better, as well.

Christmas Tree

Christmas Creep alert!! It’s Black Friday, and we’re already thinking hard about Christmas. I blame our rampant consumer culture.

Goose

You might be wondering about the weird stripes on the duck. Whenever they tell me to use a piece of printer paper (or, in this case, the instructions tell me to start from an equilateral triangle, but they also showed me how to make an equilateral triangle from an 8.5″ x 11″ piece of paper, so printer paper it is!), I lose the visual cue of having one side being differently colored. Sometimes, that comes in handy when interpreting the instructions and distinguishing the folds. Because I’m lazy, I just scribbled on one side with a pen. Overall, though, I’m pretty happy with the goose.

Winged Hat

I assume that the winged hat refers to the headwear worn by the Roman god Mercury (or Hermes, if you’re feeling Greek today). I put on this hat and ran around my apartment, but I did not feel any faster. I’ll try wearing it while biking to work some time, and let you know how it goes.

“Booda” Chair

I just…have…no idea.

Pheasant

This one goes out to all my hunting homies out there.

Turkey

We’re coming up on Thanksgiving here, so just to give you a taste, here’s a turkey. Don’t eat too much, though….gotta leave room for seconds.

Purple Heart

In honor of Veteran’s Day, November 11th, here’s a purple heart. While I do support and respect the troops….my origami skills don’t allow me to make a real good heart shape.

Angelfish

This is quite an upgrade over the last time I made an angelfish. I’d like to think that the Origami Calendar trusts me more now.

Chair

From this, and a few other origami that are coming, I feel that I’m starting up a furniture design store.

Organ

The accursed Frog Base! Yet, it does look pretty cute. Not enough legs, though.

Lame. Super lame.

Mushroom

People at home : let trained professionals make origami mushrooms. If you need some, go to the store and buy some. Whatever you do, don’t pick origami mushrooms that you see in the wild; some are toxic.

Newspaper Slippers

Overall, a pretty tight fit, but they would decent in a pinch. Also, when I’ve been to Japan, the slippers have always been a bit undersized, even for the Japanese.

Week 44, October 27th – October 31st

Dragon

I feel like something is missing. Like dragon teeth, I guess. Or a dragon body.

Ancient Ghost

Another Frog Base. Damn you, Frog Base! I think in the instructions, this was supposed to be on it’s legs and menacing you with it’s arms, but I felt it was still strange and scary even if it was on all fours. Also, as I’ve read somewhere before: “Four legs good; two legs bad.”

Ming Dynasty Officer’s Hat

I feel real bad for officers in the Ming Dynasty who had to wear stuff like this. I mean, it’s really hard to get respect wearing something like this.

Jack O’Lantern

This is one more of those “single straight cut” origami. I folded up the piece of paper along a number of mountain and valley folds to collapse the sheet into a strip, and then made one straight scissor cut, and when I opened it up, I had a Jack O’ Lantern! It would be awesome if you could do the same thing to actual pumpkins. I like these ones because if I screw up, I can cheat by just making multiple cuts, and no one can tell the difference. Not that I would, of course, as I am an origamist of honor and full disclosure.

Dracula

This is pure awesome. What really makes it is the additional drawing added, which I just copied from the instructions. I mean, this Dracula seems like a really cool guy to hang out with. Not stuck up and aristocratic, and they are often portrayed in literature, all wearing Victorian outfits and being formal. No, this Dracula is the sort of Dracula that you watch football with while throwing down some cold ones. And that bad haircut and style? That just makes him approachable. I assume his arms are behind his back or something.
