Irrelevance Glorified

Not too many people are familiar with Domokun. For a brief overview, look here, and for some video evidence, check this out. Basically, Domo-kun is this odd, brown, furry creature, hatched from an egg, that hangs out with a wise old rabbit, and watches TV. In fact, he is the mascot of NHK, Japan’s PBS. He has large pointy teeth and a mouth that can’t close. What’s not to love? Well, my japanese friends know of my Domo-kun obsession, and enable it. Imagine my surpise and delight when, upon my last visit to Japan, I discovered Domo-kun keychains/phone accessories! Even better, there are many different ones that show him in different costumes. In a day that will go down in infamy, we had a little bit of a blizzard Monday night/Tuesday morning, and classes were canceled here Tuesday and today. This was noteworthy because I can’t remember this much snow since my senior year in undergrad, and that was over winter break. It was only like 12-15 inches, which makes us seem wimpy compared to upstate New York, where we get pictures like this. But it’s a big deal here, mostly because this town has a lot of trouble clearing off a foot of snow. Update 2/14/2007: More Memories!
It is one of life’s most bitter lessons that all things must come to an end, someday. Even mountains, monoliths of cold and unyielding stone, will eventually be worn down by wind and rain. The Earth that we all know will one day be a casualty of the inevitable death of our sun.
